On May 22 of this year, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced that the U.S. will be granting TPS to Haitians who have been living in the country for 18 months. Haiti is currently facing high levels of violence, poverty, political crisis, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Secretary Mayorkas.

TPS protection allows qualified individuals living in the U.S to apply for a work permit, allow them to travel, and be free of deportation for a limited amount of time.

To be eligible for this protection status, Haitians must be in the U.S. as of May 21.
